NEW USERS

Welcome to MarketMaker. The goal of MarketMaker is to make the site a resource for all businesses in the food supply chain. We are as interested in helping a grocery store find farm-fresh eggs as we are helping the farmer find a place to sell them.

Introduction

MarketMaker is rich with demographic and business data that the user can query. Details can be summarized on a map to show concentrations of consumer markets and strategic business partners. Providing this kind of information in a map-based format makes much more sense than business lists and statistical tables.

Census data is also a feature of the site. For example, a producer wanting to sell meat to Hispanic consumers can request a map showing the greatest concentration of upper-income Hispanic households, then request a complete demographic profile of those locations.

Keyword Search

Use this tool to search all MarketMaker sites as well as AgMRC (The Agricultural Marketing Resource Center) to find related documents. This search tool will also allow you to keyword search on businesses within the current state site.

Find a Business

When searching by Find a Business, you are able to query the database for food-related businesses - Producers/Farmers, Wineries, Farmers Markets, Processors, Wholesalers, and Food Retailers/Eating/Drinking Places.

  • From the homepage, click on Begin Your Search
  • Under Find a Business, click the down arrow to the right of Select Business Type and select the type of business you want to search for.
  • Select the specifics about the business that you want to find. The specifics are different dependent on the type of business you are looking for. Once selections are made, Submit your request for information.

A search results page will appear listing all of the businesses that fit the specific criteria you are looking for.  The table includes several things:

  1. Business Name, City and State
  2. Business Email and Website, if available
  3. Action column - MapIt and Detail icons.
    1. MapIt - shows the location of the business in map view. (world globe icon)
    2. Detail - provides more specific information about the business (magnifying glass icon)
  4. Map All button - located above the results table.  This option allows you to map all of the results listed.

By mapping all of the results, you can see where the businesses are located all at once. From the map, determine an area that best suits where you are looking for businesses. To zoom in, click and drag a box around the area.

Find a Market

Find a Market queries census data in the following areas:  Education, Foreign Born, Household Type, Income, Income by Race, and Race. Click on the Find a Market icon.

At the top of the map that appears, select the Market Type you want and other specific selections that go along with it. Also select if you are searching by County, State or Multistate. When your selections are complete, click on Map It.  A map will appear showing you the results of your query.  Note which color has the largest number of people that match your request.  To zoom in closer, hold down the left mouse button and draw a box around the area you want.

Find a Market/Find a Business

After finding a particular market segment (follow directions above), you can search for businesses located in this market area by selecting the Find a Business tab located above the map.  Select the specifics about the type of business you are looking for, then click on Map It.  The search will result in markers on the map representing each business found. Yellow markers represent the 10 businesses listed in the table below the map.  The red markers represent other businesses in the search results but not currently in the results list below the map.

The amount of information you can find on MarketMaker is endless.  We hope you find MarketMaker a benefit to your business.  Please feel to contact us if you have any questions or comments.
